Curriculum Intent

At Shawfield Primary School, we have designed an ambitious, inclusive and knowledge-rich curriculum that enables every child to thrive academically, socially and emotionally. Rooted in our values of Aspiration, Respect, Resilience and Trust, our curriculum prepares children not only for the next stage of their education but also for life beyond primary school.

We recognise that children learn best when new knowledge is connected to meaningful experiences. Our curriculum therefore combines the requirements of the National Curriculum with carefully planned opportunities for enquiry, exploration and real-life application. Wherever possible, learning is enriched through first-hand experiences, visits, visitors and engagement with our local community.

Our curriculum is designed to:

• Enable children to become confident communicators and critical thinkers.
• Promote positive mental health, resilience and wellbeing.

Through our carefully sequenced curriculum, children develop the knowledge, vocabulary and learning behaviours needed to become successful, independent and motivated learners.

Curriculum Implementation 

Our curriculum is structured so that knowledge and skills are taught progressively and revisited over time, enabling children to build strong foundations for future learning. Learning is carefully sequenced to ensure continuity, challenge and increasing depth as pupils move through the school.

High-quality teaching is informed by evidence-based practice, including:

• Clear learning intentions and success criteria.
• Retrieval and review of prior learning.
• Explicit teaching of new knowledge and vocabulary.
• Opportunities for modelling, practice and application.
• Regular assessment to identify and address misconceptions.
• Adaptive teaching to support the needs of all learners.

English is taught through a carefully planned whole-school approach which develops reading, writing, speaking and listening. Mathematics follows the White Rose Maths programme, promoting fluency, reasoning and problem-solving. Specialist subjects are supported through high-quality schemes of work and subject leadership to ensure consistency, progression and breadth.

As a Local Authority Maintained, Church Affiliated School, we follow the Surrey Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education (2023-2028).

Alongside academic learning, we place significant importance on pupils' personal development. Through enrichment opportunities, educational visits, assemblies, clubs, leadership roles and community engagement, children develop confidence, character and a strong sense of belonging.
