Gallford Try announced to rebuild Shawfield Primary School

The DfE has appointed Galliford Try as principal contractor to design and construct the new school. Working alongside their specialist design team, Galliford Try are now developing detailed proposals for the new Shawfield Primary School.

The current proposals include a new two‑storey school building, located in approximately the same position as the existing structure. This new building will provide a significantly enhanced teaching and learning environment, built to the latest construction standards and designed to be highly sustainable and net‑zero carbon in operation. The redevelopment does not include any increase in pupil numbers or staffing.

The plans also include new playground areas, improved landscaping to increase the bio-diversity of our site, revised parking arrangements and a multi‑use games area, creating modern and flexible outdoor spaces for learning and recreation.

To ensure Shawfield continues to deliver high standards of education, a temporary school will be created on the lower playground for the duration of the build. These temporary facilities will include all classrooms, office spaces, assembly hall, library and a full production kitchen. Children will continue to access the school playing field and a temporary multi‑use games area throughout the construction period.

The next step is for Galliford Try to submit a detailed planning application to Guildford Borough Council. This will define the siting, layout, access, design and construction approach for the new school. Before this submission, the DfE and Galliford Try would like to seek the views of children, parents, carers and the local community to help shape the proposals.

Details of the proposals will be available for you to view on Thursday 26th March, from 3pm to 7pm in the main school hall. Representatives from the School, the DfE, Galliford Try and the Design Team will be available to discuss the plans, answer questions and gather feedback.

We will continue to keep you updated as this important project progresses. E-leaflets and a website will be made available to you in the coming weeks for you to review the proposals and provide your feedback.
